Is a Farmhouse Sink Right for Your Kitchen Remodel?

By Awakened Kitchens · Published

A farmhouse sink, also called an apron-front sink, can give you a generous basin and a visible front panel. It is not a simple swap for every standard sink. The sink’s exact dimensions, cabinet front, support, countertop opening, faucet, and plumbing must work together. Choose the model while designing the kitchen, before the sink cabinet and countertop are ordered.

Awakened Kitchens prices farmhouse sinks separately from its starting package. If you are considering one for a Chester County or other Central Pennsylvania kitchen, request a quote for the complete sink assembly and installation work. The base package includes a faucet within its selected scope, but an apron-front sink may call for cabinet and counter changes beyond a faucet replacement.

Can a farmhouse sink fit in a standard cabinet?

Sometimes, but it depends on the sink model and the cabinet. Some apron-front products are designed for a custom sink base; others are made for certain standard cabinets. Kohler’s apron-front installation instructions show the cabinet-front cutout required for one model. Blanco’s sink installation guidance shows that some models are specifically designed to fit a standard base cabinet. Neither statement applies to every sink.

Start with the exact sink specification sheet, then confirm the cabinet’s interior width, face-frame details, and required support. Do not order a sink solely because its nominal width sounds smaller than the cabinet. The manufacturer may specify a different minimum cabinet size or a particular cutout.

What changes besides the sink itself?

An apron-front installation can affect the cabinet face, internal support, countertop cutout, faucet location, drain position, and storage below the basin. A deeper bowl may reduce usable space for a disposal or cleaning supplies. Confirm these details on a drawing and with the manufacturer instructions before the countertop is fabricated.

For example, a Kohler apron-front installation guide calls for a support frame inside the cabinet for the specific cast-iron model it covers. That is product-specific guidance, not a claim that every farmhouse sink has the same weight or framing requirement. Ask the installer to follow the instructions for the exact sink selected.

Decision What to verify before ordering
Sink width and apron height Actual cabinet size, opening, door clearance, and manufacturer minimums
Bowl depth Space for drain, disposal if used, and items stored below
Countertop Cutout template, edge treatment, and material compatibility
Faucet Hole location, reach, and clearance behind the sink
Installation Support method, plumbing changes, and who coordinates the trades

Is a single bowl or double bowl better?

Choose based on how you wash dishes and handle large cookware. A single bowl leaves one uninterrupted space for baking sheets and large pans. A double bowl separates tasks, such as washing and rinsing, but each compartment is smaller. Neither layout is automatically better. Bring your largest pan measurement and think through a normal cleanup routine before deciding.

Also consider how the apron looks with the cabinet collection you prefer. The Awakened Kitchens design gallery is useful for comparing visual directions, though gallery photos may show upgrades. A sink material’s cleaning instructions and finish matter as much as its photograph.

Can you add a farmhouse sink without changing the countertop?

Possibly for a compatible retrofit product, but do not assume so. Existing countertop cutouts, support, cabinet faces, and sink dimensions vary. A conventional undermount cutout often does not suit a new apron-front model. Ask the fabricator and installer to review the actual countertop and the sink template before deciding whether reuse is realistic. If new counters are already part of the remodel, selecting the sink early helps coordinate fabrication.

If you plan to keep the rest of the kitchen layout, an apron-front sink can still change the written scope. The estimate calculator can help with early budgeting, but only a measured proposal can show the added cabinet, stone, plumbing, and installation work.

What should a farmhouse-sink quote include?

It should name the exact sink and faucet or the approved selection allowance. The quote should cover the cabinet type or modification, support, countertop cutout, plumbing connections, disposal compatibility if relevant, and finishing around the apron. Ask who orders and inspects the sink before fabrication. A late product change can affect multiple trades.

The Chester County kitchen remodeling page connects this guide to an area Awakened Kitchens markets to. Share your ZIP code and kitchen photos to confirm service at your address and allow an initial scope discussion. The feasibility of a sink change comes from the measured kitchen, not the county name.

Frequently asked questions about farmhouse sinks

Are farmhouse sinks only for traditional kitchens?

No. The exposed apron is a recognizable shape, but sinks come in several materials, colors, and edge treatments. The question is whether the look fits your cabinets and whether the bowl works for your habits. Compare a real sample or accurate product image with the proposed counter and cabinet finish.

Can the old sink cabinet be reused?

Sometimes. The cabinet must meet the chosen sink’s dimensions and support requirements, and its front may need modification. Some retrofit models are designed for particular existing cabinet configurations. Have the installer review the actual cabinet and product instructions before assuming the reuse will save money.

Is a farmhouse sink included in the base package?

No. The current Awakened Kitchens pricing page identifies farmhouse sinks as separately priced. A written quote should show the sink, cabinet work, countertop fabrication, plumbing, and any other related change. The final price depends on the product and the condition of your kitchen.

Choose the sink before the cabinet order

If an apron-front sink is on your wish list, request a kitchen consultation and bring photos of the existing sink wall. Awakened Kitchens can discuss the model, measure for feasibility, and include the full upgrade scope in the proposal.
